Magnaplate PFAS-Free Coatings Meet Non-Stick Requirements and Regulatory Targets
As concerns about PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances) — also known as "forever chemicals" — continue to mount, PFAS and compliance with PFAS-related regulations will likely be among your top considerations when you evaluate coatings to protect important metal parts. This is especially true in food and packaging industries where protecting machinery from sticky substances and plastics without tainting the end product is a top priority.
Whether you need to meet compliance targets for constantly evolving local or food and drug industry regulations, or simply want to explore PFAS-free alternatives, we offer a growing range of coatings without the fluorocarbons that carry PFAS substances. These compositions can be applied with many of our surface treatment families to give you excellent release performance and the protective features and benefits you require to keep parts functioning. Plus, you’ll gain the peace of mind that comes from knowing your parts will comply with ever-changing PFAS codes. Here are some common issues that our PFAS-free coatings address:
- When you want PVC release. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is highly abrasive and, if it builds up on machine surfaces, can cause wear. Our CS-1331 lubricious coatings prevent PVC residue from forming on machine parts, especially at high temperatures. Not only does CS-1331 prevent wear, it also features a low coefficient of friction (COF), very high contact angle, corrosion, outgassing and chemical resistance, and it withstands harsh cleaning agents. CS-1331 composition is available as part of our Plasmadize® surface treatment family, which is desirable for very large surfaces or parts.
- When you want adhesive and glue release. Magnaplate® TNSF can resist buildup from adhesives and act as a release system for all types of metal parts which come in contact with them, such as those used in adhesive formulating, label printing, tape manufacturing and converting machinery. This chemical-resistant thermal spray coating can be applied to many Magnaplate coating families, including Plasmadize and Nedox®, to give metal parts a non-stick surface. In addition, TNSF coatings are able to withstand temperatures of 400-600ºF without significant thermal degradation.
- When you want release properties at high temperatures. In addition to our CS-1331 and TNSF high-temperature compositions, our 10K family coatings also deliver exceptional release properties to parts exposed to extremely high temperatures, ensuring abrasion resistance, easy cleanup and excellent hydrophobic properties. The 10K Series can be applied to Nedox, Tufram® and many of our other popular coatings. Three variants are available:
- 10K1. Performs at up to 950°F (510°C).
- 10K2. A water-based coating that withstands up to 950°F (510°C).
- 10K3. Offers the best release properties and performs at up to 850°F (454°C).
- When you need an FDA/USDA-compliant coating. Our PFAS-free compositions are suitable for applications involving food contact. The 1331, 10K and TNSF coatings all comply with FDA regulations and can be engineered to comply with USDA regulations as well.
PFAS-Free Coatings Take the Heat and Solve Sticking Issues
Sticky surfaces and high temperatures are just two of the many challenges that our PFAS-free coatings address. To address these and other challenges, be sure to speak to a Magnaplate sales team member who can go over your application details and help you select an appropriate PFAS-free coating that matches your needs.
